A QUICK FIELD GUIDE

Format JSON online, without uploading your data

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a text format used by APIs, configuration files, and data exports. Compact JSON can be hard to read. JSON Studio adds consistent indentation so nested objects, arrays, and property values are easier to inspect.

Paste a document, upload a JSON file, or import a public HTTPS URL. Choose 2 spaces, 4 spaces, or tabs, then select Format JSON. Beautify uses the same pretty-printing engine. Minify removes unnecessary whitespace when you need a compact document instead.

Before producing output, the formatter checks standard JSON syntax. Invalid input shows an error location and a suggested correction. Copy valid output or download it as JSON or a paginated PDF. All formatting and file processing happens in your browser.

How to use JSON formatter

  1. Paste JSON into the input, upload a file, or choose From URL.
  2. Select indentation and optionally enable Sort keys.
  3. Choose Format JSON, check the output, then copy or download it.

Up to 2 MB of JSON and 100 nesting levels. URL imports require public HTTPS sources with CORS enabled.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between formatting and beautifying JSON?

In JSON Studio, Format and Beautify do the same thing: parse valid JSON and pretty print it with your chosen indentation. Minify produces a compact version without unnecessary spaces or line breaks.

Is JSON Studio free, and does it store my JSON?

The tools are free to use and do not require an account. Pasted text, uploaded files, and schemas stay in browser memory and are not uploaded to an application server. Only your theme preference is saved between visits.

Can I format JSON with comments or trailing commas?

Standard JSON does not allow comments, single-quoted strings, or trailing commas. The validator explains these errors so you can correct the input. It does not silently rewrite invalid data.

Can formatting change numbers or duplicate keys?

The tools use JavaScript JSON parsing. Duplicate property names keep the last value, and numbers use IEEE-754 precision. Put exact large identifiers in quotes before processing; integers outside the safe range trigger a warning. Array order is preserved.

Built around open standards: JSON (RFC 8259), JSON Schema, and YAML 1.2.
